First Outdoor Program - 2003
The St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels held the First Outdoor Religious Program earlier this summer at the parish picnic grounds. The program focused included a warm welcome by Parish Executive Board President Stan Brozik. Dr. Ivko Dimitric, parish Executive Board Vice-President, read from the spiritual writings of recently canonized St. Nikolai Velimirovic.
Parish Nurse Practioner and Executive Board Secretary Millicent "Mitzie" Hunchuck gave an extensive presentation of the effects of sin on health. She told the attentive listeners what happens when one indulges in gluttony, excessive use of alcoholic beverages, abuse of drugs or sexual activity that puts one at risk.
Father Rodney Torbic gave a presentation the "The Joy of Suffering" drawn largely from the Holy Scriptures, the examples of martyrs and those in society who give greatly of themselves for the benefit of others.
The program concluded with an Akathist to the Lord Jesus Christ held at The Cross in the St.George Cemetery. Mr. Petar Kodic read the responses in the Serbian language at the Akathist.
Kosovo, the Mother of God, Sts. Peter and Paul, the Holy Prophet Elijah and the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ have been themes of previous Outdoor Religious Programs.
A second program for the summer is scheduled for August 3, 2003 and will have a similar format of spiritual readings, a talk by the Parish Nurse Practioner and a presentation by the Parish Priest.
The Outdoor Religious Programs are an added feature to the parish picnics which have been held at the St. George Church for years. It is important that Serbian Orthodox Christians share the richness of the Orthodox life with others.
It is important to focus on God, the lives of the saints and the wellness of the community. The parish picnics are very special opportunities when people gather together at the Church.
