St. George Kolo Hosts Federation KSS
August 28, 2004
The St. George Circle of Serbian Sisters hosted the Federation of Circle of Serbian
Sisters of the Eastern American Diocese on August 28, 2004, the Feast of the Dormition
of the Mother of God.
The Feast of the Dormition is the patronal feast of the St.George Circle of Serbian
Sisters and of the Federation.
His Grace Bishop Dr.MITROPHAN, Diocesan Bishop, officiated at the Hierarchical Divine
Liturgy with the blessing of the Slavski Kolach (festal bread) and Koljivo (memorial wheat).
Proto Stavrofor Dragoljub Malich, Protopresyter Lt.Colonel Adam Yonitch, Protopresbyter
Rodney Torbic, Reverend Father Rajko Kosic and Father Deacon Dragoslav Kosic served with
His Grace.
Father Deacon Milan Medakovich was in attendance. Father Rajko Kosic from Holy Trinity
Cathedral of Pittsburgh was designated by Bishop MITROPHAN to give the sermon.
The St. George Choir under the direction of Sonia Janson provided the responses.
Melva Hunchuck was the honored Kuma for the Slava celebration.
The festal dinner was held in the St. George hall. Federation President Millie Radovick
greeted the attendees and expressed her appreciation to the St. George Kolo for hosting the
celebration. President Radovick introduced the members of the Federation Board in attendance.
Kolo members came from parishes in the Pittsburgh area including from Pittsburgh, Monroeville,
Youngwood and Mckeesport.
President Radovick presented an icon of St.George to Kuma Melva Hunchuck while at the
same time acknowledging Melva Hunchuck's contributions to the St. George Kolo.
St. George Circle of Serbian Sisters President Sonia Janson greeted the attendees and
spoke of the work of the Sisters in the parish. President Janson likened the work of the
Sisters to the role of a mother. She described the mothers in our lives and the motherly
love and care the Sisters devote to the parish church. President Janson referred to the
work of her own mother, long time St. George Kolo President Mildred Mickey who was present
for this celebration.
Ann Kewasky, first President of the St.George Circle of Serbian Sisters was honored at
this celebration. She was presented with an icon of the Feast of the Dormtion by current
President Sonia Janson.
St. George Executive Board President Stan Brozik extended a warm welcome in behalf of
the St. George Church. Executive Board President Brozik expressed his appreciation for the
work of the Kolo. In charitable recognition of the pressing need for the rebuilding of
Hilandar Monastery on Holy Mt.Athos due to the recent devastation by fire, Mr. Brozik
presented a substantial contribution from the St. George Church to His Grace Bishop
Dr. MITROPHAN for the Diocesan Hilandar Monastery Fund.
Kuma Melva Hunchuck and St.George First President Ann Krewasky voiced words of their
appreciation in being honored on this occasion. Both ladies represent the fine qualities
and virtues of dedication exhibited by Kolo members everywhere.
His Grace Bishop Dr.MITROPHAN addressed the beloved faithful in attendance at the dinner.
By coming to the Slava, His Grace emphasized the importance of the Kolos in the work of the
Diocese both in the parishes and at Shadeland Camp.
A successor to the Holy Apostles through the canonical laying-on of hands, by His presence
together with the clergy and Kolo members and faithful, His Grace enabled those in attendance
to experience the fullness of the Church in the Holy Hierarchical Divine Liturgy.
Protopresbyter Stavrofor Dragoljub Malich, Spiritual Father for the Federation, emphasized
the importance of each individual life to God. Proto Malich congratulated the Federation and
the St.George Kolo on this Slava celebration.
Father Rodney Torbic acknowledged the hard work of the Federation KSS throughout the
year particularly with respect to Shadeland Camp. He expressed appreciation for work of the
St. George Kolo. Sonia Janson, Melva Hunchuck and Ann Krewasky and Mildred Mickey were
recognized for the special places they have in the St. George Kolo.
St. George Kolo President Sonia Janson and the St. George Kolo members worked hard in
preparing for the Slava celebration. The participation by His Grace Bishop Dr. MITROPHAN,
visiting clergy, and the Federation KSS was an honor for the St.George Church. The Slava
celebration on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God in 2004 will long be
remembered. Thanks be to God for a beautiful day.
