Talk Given by Attorney Linda Chambers: Maintaining Hope when Evil Seems Plentiful
May 6, 2012

What is hope? It is an expectation of and desire of receiving something; it is refraining from despair; it is the capability of not giving up. Hope is the concept that allows us to believe our world will be better tomorrow than it is today.

As an assistant district attorney, I prosecute mostly felony cases: murder, rape, assault, arson and cases where children are physically harmed by crime. I see people who deliberately and maliciously harm the innocent but I also see people who do not understand that their actions are resulting in that harm. Regardless of the nature of the person committing the crime, the result is the same to the victim. Hope is lost.

Yes, there are different kinds of hope. Many of us hope that the Steelers win the Super Bowl but, that is an almost, and I stress, almost, trivial kind of hope, when compared to hope for a better world, a better future, a better life.

When we are surrounded by evil, how do we maintain hope for a better world, a better life, or a better future? Not only do we not do evil things, we speak out against evil that we see.

I’m lucky because I actually get paid for speaking out against evil; that is my job as a prosecutor. But each of us is able to speak against evil; if not literally then by the way we live our lives. Hope is the result of Faith and Faith is our belief in God. Our Faith in God leads us to Charity and Charity is selfless, unconditional and voluntary loving; it is kindness. The kindness and love we show to each other and to our neighbors allows us all to Hope for a better world and a better future.

Edmund Burke said, “The only thing needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.” Selassie stated, “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”

So, with Faith in God to guide us, we can ensure that Hope overcomes evil by our acts of kindness and charity. As Robert Kennedy said, “Every time you stand up for an ideal, you send forth a tiny ripple of hope.” If we all stand up together against evil, that “tiny ripple of hope” becomes a tidal wave of overwhelming hope for a better life, a better world and a better future.
